On the 24th of May, my class and I went to W.I.T. (Waterford Institute of Technology). The reason we went was because it was Biodiversity Week in W.I.T. We arrived by coach with the other 4th class. We all went into the auditorium with two other schools. The room was buzzing with excitement as we were going to meet the great bird expert Eric Dempsey himself! We learned many interesting facts about multiple birds. For example, did you know that a barn owl can fly silently thanks to it’s special feathers? Or that the quetzal and widow bird have the longest tails of all birds. He also showed us a real barn owl wing, two goldfinch wings and lots of feathers. Some of the feathers were very big like the swan’s feather, and some were very small like the robin’s feather. We learned many facts and when we got back, we were all in agreement that we had a fantastic trip meeting Eric Dempsey.

The BFG

In school we are reading The BFG.  We’ve drawn a picture of the Bloodbottler because Roald Dahl gave a great description of him.  The BFG is nice, jumbly and kind. The Bloodbottler is 20 feet taller than The BFG.  The Bloodbottler eats human ‘beans’.  The Bloodbottler wears a cloth around his waist.  The Bloodbottler is greedy, hairy, horrifying, fat, yucky, nosey, ugly and scary.  The Bloodbottler is a bone crunching brute.   We like laughing at words like ‘whizzpopper’, ‘snozzcumbers’ and ‘bellyhoppers’.

Pupils from 5th Class recently enjoyed a trip to Tramore Racecourse as part of an initiative run by Horse Racing Ireland to educate young people about the horse racing industry. Pupils spoke to the race course manager, a local horse trainer, a local jockey and members of staff from horse racing Ireland. Pupils learned about the day to day running of the racecourse, the life of a jockey and how to look after a race horse. Keep an eye out in local papers over the next week or so for some more pictures.

Pupils from Glór Na Mara recently took part in a 5 session cycling skills and safety course run by local men Dermot and Niall. Throughout these sessions pupils learned how to safely check and maintain their bikes. They also learned how to safely cycle on main roads and how to correctly navigate junctions with traffic. The course finished off with a cycle around Newtown Cove last. Each class thoroughly enjoyed this experience and had great fun on a beautiful Thursday afternoon.

Observational Drawings
We were learning about drawing and how important it is to look at what you are drawing.  We turned the pictures upside down before we drew them so that we would concentrate on the lines.  We drew straight lines, wiggly lines, chubby lines, wavy lines, curvy lines and lots more.  It made it much easier to copy the picture by looking at the lines rather than the whole picture.

They faced Gaeiscoil na nDéise in the semi final on the 17th May. It was an exciting game and although they were losing two nil at half time, the girls won the game 3-0 to 2-2. The final will take place in Walsh park in two weeks time. Best of luck girls!
