BT YOUNG SCIENTIST AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION

I was lucky enough to go to BTYSTE 2018 this year. It was held in the RDS in Ballsbridge, Dublin. My brother and sister applied to enter their projects and they were successful! They are both students in Ard Scoil na Mara and entered different projects. As you can imagine our house has been very, very busy for the last few months!  I went to Dublin with my family to support them on the 12th of January.

The exhibition was on from the 11th to the 13th January. The first thing I saw when I when I entered the RDS was a huge exhibition hall full of projects.  There were hundreds of people visiting the RDS. There were interesting things that weren’t projects too.

I interviewed some young people that were part of the BT young scientist and technology exhibition. I chose some projects that I thought the Green Team would be interested in.

I interviewed my brother, Conor, a former member of the Glór Na Mara Green Team.  He is in TY.

Please have a look at my questions and the replies of the entrants!

Q1.  “What is your project about?”

“My project is a study into the awareness of Haemochromatosis in Ireland.”

Q2. “What were the results?”  

There is a very low awareness of the condition in Ireland.”

I interviewed yet another former member of the Green Team, Róisín(my  sister) and her friends.

Q1.”What is your project about?”

“My project is about the sexist conditioning of children through TV and film”

Q2.”What were the results?”

“70% of kids picked up on the clear and blatant sexism but less than half picked up on it disguised as a joke”

I interviewed a boy about his project.

Q1.”What is your project about?”

I am trying to see what people think and how they use the town park.”

Q2.”What were the results?”

“I compared two parks and found that one was busier than the other.”

I interviewed three girls about their project.

Q1.”What is your project about?”

“Our project is about Organic food and what people think organic means”

Q2.”What were the results?” “3/10 of people said organic means healthy, 3/10 said natural and 4/10 said no chemicals.”

Q1 “What is your project about?”

“Our project is about plastic pollution and bottle deposit refund scheme.”

Q2.”There was a lot of awareness of animal deaths caused by plastic pollution.”

Q1. “What is your project about?”

“We tested if people with two languages are better at puzzles and brain games.”

Q2 “What were the results?”

“We found out that people with two languages were better at brain games and puzzles”

I interviewed three boys about their project.

Q1. “What is your project about?”

“It’s an environmental project encouraging people to bring their own cups to cafes.”

Q2. “What were the results?” 68% of people said they wanted 10% off if they kept their carbon cups”

I interviewed two girls about their project.

Q1. “What is your project about?”  

“Our project is about using insects as a reliable food source.”

Q2. “What were the results?” “Insects are 66% nutrition, and chicken is 16%, so insects would be a good food source.”

Q1. “What is your project about?”

“My project is testing if birds can predict the weather” Q2.”What were the results?” “Yes, birds can predict the weather”

I interviewed three girls about their project.

Q1.”What is your project about?”

Our project is about the effects on bees’ health from different materials”

Q2. “Why are bees so important?” “Bees are very important for pollination”Q3. “What were the results?” “Based on temperature and humidity, the polystyrene hive was better”

I interviewed the overall winner Simon! I shook his hand and congratulated him on his fantastic achievement!

Q1 “What is your project about?” I asked him.

“My project is an investigation of the antimicrobial effects of the aerial and root parts of selected plants against Staphylococcus aureus.

Q2  “How do you feel about winning?” “Ecstatic.  Totally ecstatic.”

 

I really enjoyed visiting the exhibition. I hope, some day, to follow Róisín and Conor’s footsteps. Please have a look at the photos I took. I hope you enjoy them.

Mr. Frank O’Donoghue and Mr. Andy Kelly, co-authors of a recent book on Tramore, visited the Third and Fourth classes on Wednesday 17 January. They showed the children a slideshow of over twenty old photographs of Tramore. Many of the photographs were taken around 1900. Andy brought in a camera from the 1890s, and explained how it works (it still works!). Andy and Frank pointed out details in the photographs and mentioned interesting facts about Tramore. They also kindly gave two copies of their book to the school.

We encourage the children from Third and Fourth classes to recreate an old photograph. They can use any of the photos included in the gallery below (image credits included on each photo). Otherwise the boys and girls are welcome to choose another old photo – that they have permission to use – in a recognisable part of Tramore. We hope to create an exhibition of all of these photos – old alongside present day photos. Get snapping!

On 15 December, Mr. Noel Power visited Glór na Mara. Every year he works with a team and builds the crib in the church. The team start work on the first Sunday in December, and the crib is unveiled at midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Noel described the Holy Land at the time of Christ’s birth and showed the children a map. He also spoke about the history of the Holy Cross crib. The crib is made from local materials: moss from the Comeragh mountains, reeds from a bog four miles away and limestone, bushes and pines from the Tramore area. There are twenty seven wooden figures remaining in the crib, and they are made out of Austrian oak. From time to time, Noel and his team have to repair the figures which are over 120 years old.

The children in Third Class have been working with their buddy readers in Senior Infants. Third Class have been going through their letters, sounds, and word bags with them. The children have also been enjoying listening as Senior Infants practise their reading from books.

Third and Fourth Classes were swapping teachers so that they could do plenty of experiments for Science Week.

Experiment 1: Bacteria (Ms. Britton)
Children collected samples from around the school and watched as bacteria grew in sealed agar plates. Ugh!

Experiment 2: Myself (Ms. Dreelan)
Children investigated some scientific facts about themselves. They took fingerprints, found out which is their dominant eye and investigated the blind spot in their eyes.

Experiment 3: Lava Lamp (Ms. Fitzpatrick)
Children experimented to see how oil, water, food colouring and an Alka Seltzer tablet can be changed by mixing.

Experiment 4: Colour Walking (Ms. O’Neachtain)
Children investigated to see how ink separates into constituent colours by putting marker on blotting paper.

We have been learning about the properties of regular and irregular 2-D shapes: squares, rectangles, ovals, circles, triangles, hexagons, and semi-circles.

In our groups, we made creatures using 2-D shapes.

We have been learning about Egypt and the Ancient Egyptians. We made pyramids using cocktail sticks and marshmallows!

For fun, we got together in our literacy groups and we challenged eachother to see who could make the tallest tower. Group 1 won – their tower measured 30cm in height! Well done Helenka, Isaac, Christopher and April!

Ms. Dreelan’s 3rd Class created Maths puzzles in groups of three, pairs or individually.

The 3rd Class children then challenged Mr. Ó Cathasaigh’s class to see if they could answer their puzzles. 5th Class found many of the puzzles tricky!

Mark from Biodiversity in Schools came to speak to the third classes about biodiversity. First, we played some fun animal games to get warmed up. Then, he talked about bees and their needs. It was very interesting because recently, we discovered a honeycomb in our school garden! We talked about how bees made honey and watched a video about collecting pollen.
   Mark showed us the inside of a hive and the honey that his bees made- it was so cool! Alex dressed up as a beekeeper.Then, we went outside and caught three bumblebees. Afterwards, we made our own pots for planting sunflower seeds from newspaper. Today, we all planted sunflowers for the bees.
